Vortex flowmeters, which are specifically designed to detect lower viscosity gases, liquids, and steam, operate based on the theory of Karman and Strouhal, which establishes the relationship between flow and vortex generation.

Principle of Vortex flowmeter wafer installation

Vortices are created when a fluid passes a stationary barrier at a specific speed. Karman’s Vortices is the name given to this vortex creation.The form and face width of the bluff body affect the frequency of vortex shedding, which is a direct linear function of fluid velocity. The calculation f=(St*V)/c*D provides the frequency since the inner diameter of the pipe and the breadth of the blockage will both be roughly constant.
